    Shanghai Young Bakers (SYB)

    Shanghai Young Bakers (SYB) is a charity organization providing a fully-sponsored training in traditional French bakery to underprivileged Chinese youth aged 17 to 23, enabling them to find qualified jobs and lead independent lives after graduation.

    Launched in February 2009, sponsored by Carrefour Foundation and other corporations, SYB’s one-year training combines intensive classes in both French and Chinese bakery, with practical internships at 4&5-star hotels. After completing the program, the 30 students can then obtain employment opportunities in bakeries or hotels in Shanghai and all across China.

    In order to increase its financial stability, SYB is now moving towards a social enterprise model, and has opened half-day bakery classes and bread & pastry catering to individuals and companies wishing to contribute to the success and sustainability of the program.

    SYB is managed by a dynamic French-Chinese team, and operates under the governance of Chi Heng Foundation.

    Executive Director

    The full-time Executive Director leads and manages the operational and strategic aspects of the organization in coordination with the program stakeholders.

    The Executive Director should work towards maximizing the students’ training opportunities and facilitating their integration into the working world, in particular by ensuring (1) the charity nature of the program, (2) the high quality of the training, and (3) the long-term sustainability of the organization.

    During the first 6 months, the Executive Director will work in a support role to the current Program Manager, in order to better understand the complexities of the program, and eventually take over all the responsibilities of the Program Manager in addition to the organization’s executive leadership.

    Main responsibilities:

    ØDuring the first 6 months (transition period):

    1. Lead partnerships, fundraising and revenue-generating activities
    ·Secure financial resources for the program through fundraising actions, sponsorship proposals, service partnerships, in-kind donations and other appropriate methods; nurture all ensuing relationships; help design and implement appropriate CSR strategies

    ·Support Marketing Coordinator in promoting social teambuilding bakery classes as well as bread & pastry sales and technical consulting services to raise funds and awareness for the program

    ·Represent SYB and promote cooperation opportunities at meetings and events

    1. External communication – with the support of the Communication intern
    ·Organize program’s and students’ participation in bakery-related exhibitions, shows, competitions and focused social events

    ·Promote program and sponsors’ visibility in the media and during activities

    ·Supervise design, content & updates of website, social media accounts, and all communication material

    1. Support operational and strategic management
    ·Follow program planning, implementation and developments

    ·Help coordinate program staff (currently: 1 program manager, 1 part-time admin manager, 3 bakery teachers, 1 social educator, 1 marketing coordinator, 1 communication intern, 1 partnership intern) and volunteers

    1. Prepare for future developments / long-term sustainability
    ·Organize the preparation, trip and return of the 2 SYB students that will be sent to France in 2014-2015 to be trained as SYB teachers

    ·Work towards raising the quality standards at SYB Baking Centre to support the professional and commercial developments of the program; examine and follow up on options for a social bakery/café

    ·Develop cooperation opportunities with other NGOs to enlarge the scope of program beneficiaries; for example, by expanding the “Train-the-Trainer” program with like-minded NGOs

    ØAs the Executive Director:

    1. Overall leadership and program coordination
    ·Set the vision and landmarks for the next five years, lead planning and implementation

    ·Regularly update and manage relations with program partners as well as sponsors and operational partners

    ·Manage human and financial resources; develop the teachers’ career plan

    1. Students’ lives and training follow-up
    ·Organize students’ recruitment, together with partner NGOs

    ·Provide support on daily life issues and integration, in coordination with social educator

    ·Organize training program (full content & schedule) in coordination with bakery teachers as well as partner schools, partner programs and volunteers

    ·Evaluate training quality and lead improvements

    ·Manage baking centre (rental, equipment, ingredients, organization, renovation) and negotiate terms with suppliers, in coordination with teachers and rest of SYB team

    ·Manage and renew partnerships with hotels to provide relevant internship placements to the students

    ·Organize extra-curricular activities (weekend outings, bakery-related events, extra classes)

    1. Social enterprise
    ·Implement professional standards, appropriate marketing and efficient strategy to ensure an increase of commercial revenue while safekeeping the organization’s social priorities

    ·Supervise all commercial activities (public classes, catering, technical consulting, rental), together with the Marketing Coordinator

    1. Partnerships, external communication, and future developments as described above

    Position requirements:

    • Dedication to work in a growing multi-cultural non-profit organization with a Str0ng interest in social enterprise development. Committed to making a difference.
    • Ability to lead, influence, and make operational and strategic decisions to drive the program as a high-quality, sustainable social model.
    • Str0ng working knowledge in French, English and Mandarin (ex: able to effectively lead meetings in any of these languages)
    • Proven experience of program management in a multi-cultural setting. Good knowledge of Chinese culture and working environment.
    • Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills (in all 3 languages)
    • Interest in the food/bakery industry.

    Work conditions:

    • 2-3 year work contract (renewable)
    • Full-time, flexible hours (activities/meetings to be expected on weekends/evenings)
    • Location: Shanghai
      • Office work: Chi Heng Foundation Shanghai office (西康路长寿路)
      • Events/classes: SYB Baking Centre (普陀区绥德路889号)
      • Outside meetings & events to be expected
    • Base salary in line with Chinese NGO standards + fixed bonus depending on qualifications, experience and dedication.
